Cyril (always called Charles) Mahoney had taught Evelyn Dunbar at the Royal College of Art and she was asked by him to work at Brockley. When they did the book together it did not occur to either of them to sign their drawings, with the result that we have no idea apart from intuitive appraisal who drew what. In the same way we do not know if the text is Charles’s or Evelyn’s.

The writing is quite serious and is for the truly dedicated gardener - there are detailed descriptions of the plants that the two devoted gardeners would ideally choose for a garden. But the main delight of the book is the drawings - black and white illustrations that have never been reproduced since their first publication in 1937. The reason for reissuing it now is that two years ago a cache of 500 of Evelyn Dunbar drawings and paintings were discovered in a house in Kent: someone had brought a Dunbar work to the Antiques Roadshow and seeing it had prompted the owner of the archive to get it down from the attic. An exhibition at the Pallant Gallery in Chichester is the result (it runs from October until February 14th 2016).
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0537/7009/2743/products/persephone-book-zoom_10889d52-6263-4664-8910-69e9eaa70392.jpg?v=1614623845
how-to-run-your-home
How To Run Your Home
Full Title: How To Run Your Home Without Help

224 pages
Persephone Books
First published in 1949

Persephone Book no.62 is How To Run Your Home Without Help by Kay Smallshaw:

'Some of the smartest lessons in how we live now are to be found not in government speeches or fashionable film releases, but in the small grey covered books published by Persephone Books,' wrote Andrew O'Hagan in the Daily Telegraph. She then had two children, gave up writing poetry and took to gardening with enormous enthusiasm and dedication. She wrote only two books, Fool’s Garden (1936), about creating a garden in Surrey, and the one we have chosen to reprint, Gardener's Nightcap. After the war, for thirty years, she was a well-known columnist for gardening magazines. Although a great beauty, Muriel Stuart was shy and self-contained - and happiest in her garden.

This work of hers is indeed a ‘nightcap’: a soothing tonic to take in small doses just before bed. The subjects covered are many and variegated. They include: Meadow Saffron, Dark Ladies (‘fritillary to me spells enchantment’, which is why we have chosen them for the endpaper), Better Goose-berries, Good King Henry (‘quite a good substitute for asparagus’), The Wild Comes Back and Phlox Failure. Each of these pieces is only a few lines in length yet tells the gardener far more than extensive essays or manuals. Gardener’s Nightcap, a bestseller in its year of first publication, is illustrated by charming Rex Whistler-type drawings. And we end with the opening sentence: ‘There is an hour just before dark, when the garden resents interference. Its work, no less than the gardener’s, is done. Do not meddle with the garden at that hour. It demands, as all living creatures demand, a time of silence...’
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0537/7009/2743/products/persephone-book-zoom_bdad944d-57b4-44c3-8f2a-d29895be2ea2.jpg?v=1615583996
the-great-dixter-cookbook
The Great Dixter Cookbook

Hardback
240 pages
Phaidon Press

The Great Dixter Cookbook features seventy simple and delicious seasonal recipes from the kitchen garden at Great Dixter which include English classics such as chicken and leek pie, apple crumble, and beetroot chutney, as well as contemporary recipes like crispy kale with sea salt and shakshuka.
